My YouTube account was hacked. Here’s what happened.

Hi everyone, this is Russ from Retro Game Corps. So this morning while I was sleeping, someone infiltrated my YouTube channel and started streaming some cryptocurrency scam thing that got my account banned and deleted.

Let me start by saying how overwhelmed I was by the response from everyone. Hundreds of emails, website comments, discord pings, reddit messages, facebook/twitter DMs, even Skype phone calls….thank you to everyone who was so quick to notify me and show your support. It means the world to me that you chose to take the time out of your day to try and help my page.

Thanks to you and your support, YouTube noticed my situation and were able to take action. They are still working through the details, but it looks like at the very least I was able to get my channel back, and reinstate all of my videos. It appears that my Community tab on YouTube was wiped but I hope to get those memes back at some point 🙂

For those curious, yes I had a unique password and two-factor authentication set up for this channel. I’m not sure how this happened, but right now I’m just thankful that all of my guides are still available for everyone to use.

So where do we go from here? I’m not really sure. I’m pretty certain that my YouTube analytics/algorithm/magic was probably hampered by this nefarious account activity, so my guess is that as I make new videos in the coming weeks, they might not have the amount of reach that they usually do. So if you want to make sure you catch my latest videos, I would encourage you to check my channel periodically to see if there is anything you missed, or maybe “hit that bell” or whatever so that you get notifications.

Thank you again for the support and encouragement. What a crazy day.

Update: I did some forensics and figured out the source of the hack. Here it is:

  1. So glad you were able to resurrect your channel. We’re all saying, “yeah, man, we want you back!” 😁

Hopefully none of the usurper’s 1.4k livestream viewers — assuming they were real people and not just a bunch of bots — fell for the scheme.

    Have a better weekend, sir!

  3. Glad you got it sorted, we are all rooting for you.
Bit worrying they can get through 2fa when we are all told it is the only way to protect our accounts.

  4. Wow. I’ve been hacked before too (my bank accounts) and it’s a horrific experience. Glad you are getting it all sorted and even managed to track the source. A lesson for us all!
