Guide: Undertale on Retro Handheld Devices

Guide: Undertale on Retro Handheld Devices

Last updated: 13JUL2022 (see Changelog for details)

UPDATE: PortMaster has recently created a one-stop shop for all things related to running ports on retro handhelds. I recommend checking out their website and my most recent PortMaster guide instead of the guide below; I’m leaving this page up for posterity’s sake only. To get started, head over to their Games tab, find the game you want to run, and check out their instructions on that page. If you run into any issues, their discord server is also a great place to start.

Today we’re going to install and play Undertale on RK33265-based retro handheld devices thanks to the PortMaster app. The game can run on the following devices:

Anbernic RG351P (ArkOS final, TheRA, 351ELEC)
Anbernic RG351M (ArkOS final, TheRA, 351ELEC)
Anbernic RG351V (ArkOS, TheRA, 351ELEC)
Anbernic RG351MP (ArkOS, TheRA, 351ELEC)
PowKiddy RGB10 (ArkOS)
GameForce Chi (ArkOS)
RK2020 (ArkOS)
ODROID Go Advance (ArkOS)
ODROID Go Super (The RetroArena, RetroOZ)
PowKiddy RGB10 Max (The Retro Arena, RetroOZ)

The video below is a bit outdated, since it uses the older AnberPorts app and requires you to extract Linux files from a Windows PC. See below for the “simple conversion process” and the PortMaster solution instead.

Guide: Handheld Screen Settings for RG351 Devices

Last updated: 20MAY2021 (see Changelog for details)

There is a lot of different options available to you when you play handheld systems like the Game Boy or Game Gear on the RG351P or RG351M. So in this guide I’ll walk you through how to set up overlays, shaders, colorization, and ghosting in order to accurately recreate those original handheld systems.

Note that these instructions are specifically for the ArkOS and 351ELEC custom firmwares. If you are using the stock firmware, you can generally just follow the ArkOS instructions, but I would recommend you check out my firmware comparison guide and make the switch to one of these.

Guide: DOOM (+ Mods) on the RG351P and RG351M

Last updated 31MAY2021 (see Changelog for details)

Getting the first two DOOM games set up on a new device is a rite of passage. Heck, even the latest Nintendo Game & Watch device has been hacked to play DOOM. Luckily, no complex hacking is required to run DOOM on the RG351 devices, because the RetroArch PrBoom core is already loaded on your device, ready to send you back to 1993.

So in today’s guide we’ll show you how to set up DOOM on the RG351P’s many operating systems, how to tweak the settings to your liking, and how to run DOOM mods as well.

If you are an ArkOS user, be sure to check out this LZDoom guide, which will open up even more opportunities for you.

ArkOS, another excellent RG351P firmware

ArkOS, another excellent RG351P firmware

Last updated: 13JAN2021

Fresh off the heels of 351ELEC, another RG351P operating system is now available. This one is called ArkOS, and it has some features that may make it my favorite operating system yet.

The developer who created ArkOS is not new to RK3326 chipset devices like the RG351P, as they had previously developed an operating system called TheRA-NTFS that was used on similar ODROID GO ADVANCE handheld devices (and clones). But there were enough deviations from TheRA-NTFS to warrant a new name, and now we have ArkOS (Another RK3326 OS).

What I really love about this OS is that it has a lot of quality of life features: online updating, 32-bit and 64-bit userspace, background music, and screensaver options. So let’s dive into this OS and show why I think this might be the best one yet.
